Masrur is one place in Kangra District in Himachal which is not very famous among the tourists who visit Dharamshala, Kangra or Mcleodganj. Masrur is located about 35 km from Dharamshala. From Gaggal you need to take the Nagrota Surian link road to reach Masrur. Masrur has one of the greatest and finest groups of rock cut temples. There are about 15 monolithic groups of rock cut temples in Masrur.
The Masrur Rock Temples are carved richly in the Indo Aryan style. The Rock Temples are the only luxuriously decorated cave temples in Himachal and entire North India. There are three stone images of Ram, Kaxman and Sita on the main Shrine of Masrur Rock Temples. You will also find figure of Lord Shiva in the centre.
It is believed that the ancient temples in Masrur built in Rock-cut style were built during the reign of the Pallava king Narsingha varman I Mahamalla (630-668 A.D.). Though the work was left un finished during his reign, it was finally completed during the reign of that of Krishna I (758-773 A.D.).
How to Reach Masroor Rock Temples Kangra
Masrur is about 50 Kms from Pathankot the nearest broadguage stations. Toy trains from Pathankot are also available till Nagrota Suriyan.
From Dharamshala or kangra town you need to take the Nagrota Surian Road. Masroor is around 35 Kms from Dharamshala and 32 Kms from Kangra.
